What To Do When You Realise You Lose Your Files / Folders

The most crucial period of the data recovery process is the very moment you lose your data.

DROP EVERYTHING!

That’s right. If you lose your files in your computer, stop using it. Ipod? Stop using it. Phone? Stop using it.

Done?

Now, before you run screaming your head off in panic:

Calm Down

Basically, anytime you encounter any problems, it is best to calm down. This is not easy, but necessary.

There are many things to do, but first walk away from the situation. Go read a book, take a walk or simply have a drink or two. Once you are ready, get a pencil and paper, which, although unnecessary, can help alleviate your panic.

Remember What Happened

If you can, try to remember what happened before you lost your data.

Did you hear any weird sounds, such as clicking noises?

Dropped the storage media (hdd, Ipods etc.)?

Deleted/format/partition anything?

Have you installed anything lately?

This information will help you (and the data recovery company should you need one) to asses what has gone wrong and the appropriate data recovery measure that should be taken.

Asses The Type Of Data Loss

Data recovery companies divide data loss into 2 categories, logical and physical. There are certain characteristics which are prevalent in both categories. Look at the corresponding pages below for some of these characteristics:

Once you have determined the type data loss you are suffering from, you need to take the proper action.

Take the appropriate data recovery action

Both physical and logical failures require different recovery methods, though sometimes it overlaps.

The important to note that data recovery is possible, and is in fact close to 100%, provided you take the proper actions when you lose data.
