Preventing Data Loss

Prevention is the best cure. No truer words have been spoken. Although most of these tips cite a PC as an example, other devices such as mp3 players and laptops apply also.

Avoid Dropping Media!

..or any type of physical trauma! That means not kicking and punching the device if it doesn’t work! If you have a portable hard disk, laptop or Ipod player, put it in a padded case. Even if the product is hardy, it’s best that you protect it before anything happens.

Check Integrity of Save File

Before you close a program, save another copy of the work file, and check to see if it has been save properly. Sometimes saves can be corrupted due to software bugs. Thus it is best to see if the save file is properly done before you close the programme.

Backups

The most successful way to prevent data loss is to have an excellent back up plan. When you actually lose your files on your primary data storage, you can rely on the backups without much loss.

However, make sure that your backup is reliable!

Save On a Different Location From Your Operating System

If anything afflicts your computer, it usually affects the operating system. To avoid this, save you documents on a separate drive, CD, floppy (not practical nowadays though) or even online!

Where Is Your Backup Stored?

Is it in a safe place? Or is it susceptible to moisture? Is there direct sunlight? Environmental factors may affect your data or you may even incur physical damage.

Run Anti-Virus Programmes

Run anti-virus programmes so that you (yes you) don’t get your computer infected. And that includes scanning emails, files sharing and downloads.

Use An Anti-Surge Protector

Once in a while you may encounter thunderstorms, or even power surges from you electric supply which can damage your electrical appliances. Sensitive precision devices, such as hard disks, have a higher probability of failing to such power surges.

Get A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

In case the classic horror film scenario comes true and you are faced with a black out in the most tense of moments, at the very least you have time to save your data before power runs out.

Shut Down Properly

Shut down your programmes properly, including you operating system. This is to allow the programmes to properly save backups, temporary folders, settings or anything necessary which enables it to operate at the maximum capability.

Resist The Urge To Tinker

Do not open the device. Do not open covers, to not take apart that ipod. Do not install hard disks if you don’t know how. Do not DO no DO NOT do anything stupid. These are not toys to tinker around with if you have any precious data inside.
