Hardware Related Data Loss

When the storage media itself has incurred physical damage, the result is usually devastating, and most often, recovery is costly.

Flash Memory

Flash memory, or flash drive, is a small, sold state based storage device. Since it has no movable parts, it is more durable than hard disks and also more compact compared to optical discs.

How Flash Memory Works

Write And Erase Limitations

Flash drives, although durable, have a limit on the number times files can be saved and erased from it. Although the limit is a hundred thousand cycles, writing to the drive will slow down after extensive usage.

Severe Physical Trauma

Although flash memory is sturdier that hard disks, there is still a chance that a very severe knock, fall or any other extreme physical trauma will damage it.

Improper Wiring, Faulty Device

Sometimes, an improperly wired USB hub may cause the flash drive to be corrupted or damaged. Be careful, especially if you are using third party hardware.
